This last week has seen not only a large shift in some people lives but also the future landscape of the Jonkershoek Valley. As a new Station in the heart of the Jonkershoek , we at the VWS Jonkershoek Station welcomed our first ever batch of new recruits.
With looks on their faces that tore everyone of us back in nostalgia, we were there only a little more than a year ago, to a time where yellow cladded fire “fighting people” ran us through bushes, mumbled something on radios and drenched us to the core. Little did we know, that we were going to end up in running our own station in just over a year later.
We stood there a proud and humbled station, knowing that we have come such a long way. All the time, planning and pancake flipping had paid off and we are now well on our way to becoming a daily part of Stellenbosch and its surrounds.
The guidance and support we received from our VWS Newlands “mother” station and its members like Dennis, Mark, Fed, and Peter to mention a few, have been pivotal in our growth and there are not enough words to express our gratitude. CapeNature has also played a large role in our formation and as of this weekend we now also have a Control centre as part of the VWS Jonkershoek base. Thanks to the help of Patrick Shone and Peter Viljoen, both from CapeNature, our base has realised and is ready to host our members and welcome members of the public that would like to know more about how we are “Committed to Integrated Wildfire Management”
To all the new recruits, WELCOME, and for all the support we have received and will still need, THANK YOU!
Cheers,
Carel
