On Saturday 21 November the Volunteer Wildfire Services celebrated 10 years of fighting fires and saving lives with their 10 Year Anniversary Open Day 2009. Over 1,500 visitors attended and this event became the largest and most well received open day in the history of the VWS.

The Volunteer Wildfire Services sent a team of 17 highly qualified fire fighters to conduct a controlled burn in Noordhoek this past Monday. Several medium-sized stacks of cleared alien vegetation and dead fynbos was burnt out. The Volunteer Wildfire Services has trained 8 fire fighters through Emergency Medical Training (EMT) in advanced Level III first aid. The course was run over two consecutive weekends and was an excellent reminder of the dangers involved in wild land fire fighting operations and how to deal with severe medical emergencies.
